109 Allerton under new management
Ray Taylor took over 109 Allerton in March 2019 and the former Living Room Head Chef is the new driving force behind the restaurant.
Ray and the 109 team have retained the healthy focussed menu that customers love. And Ray’s passion for great food is matched only by his passion for a great customer experience, which means the team has grown and service has become a real focus for success. Ray explains a bit about what makes him tick and why he loves what he does.
Why 109 Allerton?
“The restaurant’s in a fantastic location on Allerton Road, the ambience is great. Small enough to feel intimate, big enough to have a relaxed and laid-back feel going. And then there was of course the menu.
My background is in creating healthy, tasty food from really good ingredients, so the existing menu was obviously perfect for me. I decided to keep the day time menu. There are some dishes that are really popular like our 109 Superfood Bowl, which is a build your own salad, prepared to a diner’s spec and packed with nutrition.
Our breakfasts, brunches and lunches are served all day and are healthy, while tasting really good! I think people are now looking for an alternative to a heavy, greasy breakfast and we’re finding that customers ours and come back for more.
And then there’s the Sunday lunches, which are hugely popular. I think our roasties are becoming legendary! We offer a sophisticated but family friendly environment and we’re fully accessible too.
Have you made any changes since March?
When I took over I was aware that the main issue for previous customers was disappointment in wait times and levels of service. We’ve worked hard to address this, we’ve got a bigger team, place a lot of emphasis on making sure diners have a good experience and we are vigilant about addressing feedback. And since March we’ve turned our reviews around and we’re currently seeing a 5* rating on Trip Advisor. So, we’re thrilled about that. And it’s great to see old customers returning!
Any news we need to know about?
We launched our evening menu in late June. We created and tested numerous dishes before launch and we’re really delighted with our offering. Fresh, summer flavours, top quality ingredients from our local suppliers and we’ve also revamped the drinks menu so there’s some gorgeous wines on offer along with artisan gin, vodka and cocktails. We only serve dinner on a Friday and Saturday evening, so we’ve made sure that diners have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the full evening. We don’t ask you to leave after an hour!
We’ve also just been granted permission for some outdoor seating so we’re all set for summer. We’ve also got bi-fold windows so we’re looking forward to some sultry evenings for that lovely continental vibe.
With over 20 years’ experience, Ray is a veteran of the Liverpool food scene and has worked in some of the city’s best-known kitchens. Starting out at The Left Bank (Spire), Ray moved to Living Ventures progressing to Head Chef in the Liverpool and Edinburgh Living Room restaurants, running teams and producing the food for which the restaurants became famous.
He worked as Executive Chef at Lucha Libre and in fast paced corporate dining before moving to Australia to work at the renowned Tall Timber in Melbourne. This provided the real inspiration for Ray to focus on health food.
On his return Ray established his own business, Peel and Coconut, delivering his own-recipe, healthy, ready-made dishes to customers’ homes. Equipped with the experience, knowledge and confidence to take on a restaurant, Ray decided breathing new life into 109 Allerton was the perfect choice.
